Dance is a beautiful piece of work that allows dancers to express themselves to an audience and can make people feel many different emotions. Dancers put in many hours of work and lots of effort and definitely put in the same amount of effort as any other sport. They have coaches like a sport, they compete as a sport, they practice like any other sport. However, dance also could be categorized as a form of art because art expresses a message to an audience and that is exactly what dance is all about.
Dancers put in just as much time at dance practices as any other sport does. On average, dancers spend around 15-25 hours a week in their studio practicing while football players only spend around 10-15 hours a week at practice. This means that dancers tend to practice more than double the amount that football players do. Dance also requires time, discipline, and dedication just like any other typical sport. However, in the United States, dance is not legally considered a sport.
People also argue that dance should not be a sport and it should just be a form of art. Art is defined as something that is created with skill or imagination and expresses ideas or feelings. Dance is basically the exact definition of that. Dance expresses a message to the audience in some way. The way they move is the piece of art. Dancers also emotionally connect to themselves and the audience as they try to express a certain message.
There are many different beliefs when it comes to this topic. Sabrina Preciado, a freshman at Eleanor Roosevelt High School stated, “I believe dance is more of a sport rather than an art because it involves expressing your emotions and creativity through your movement. Dancers use their emotions to share their feelings and tell stories through their choreography. When dancers perform, their goal is to form an emotional connection with the audience. While dance can be classified as a sport, the artistic expression through emotional connections with yourself and others makes it an art.”
Kason Schelling, also a freshmen at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, believes that dance should just be considered an art. He stated, “I think dance is more of a piece of art because it’s a sign of expression. Also, it is very diverse in the dance moves you can do.”
Whether dance is a sport or an art, dancers definitely deserve more recognition for the dedication they have towards dance.
