Do you love animals?
The relationship between animals and humans has existed since the beginning of time. In our not-so-pretty ages, animals were companions to people, and often those animals would hunt and protect their owner. Nowadays we hunt down in the encoded jungle where we showcase our furry companions to the world, dog shows and sharing pets on social media have allowed people from all over the world to bond over their love of animals.
Humans have evolved over the past thousands of years, and so have the animals around the world. We’ve grown to appreciate the other inhabitants of Earth in a new light.
People can show love to animals in many ways, the most popular way is to adopt a pet. There is a wide range of animals to choose from but some people have animals that they prefer over others.
Some find animals as a way to relate to themselves. People can find comfort just on the pure fascination that a specific animal can bring. Some coined this as someone’s spirit animal.
For example, my (Jony Benal) two favorite animals are very different, but I like them because they remind me of peace and reminds me of a little of myself. First, I love orangutans, I wish I had the thumbs on their feet and their enormous arm reach. They can swing around from tree to tree and eat fruit all day, that’s my retirement plan.
And the second, are the great big and lovable cows! Cows come in all kinds of colors and textures. There’s classic black and white or Holstsein-Friesan which produces the most milk, or the fuzzy kind or Highland Cattle. Cows are peaceful, composed, and beautiful.
I (Journey Vergara) have two favorite animals both starting with the letter B. First off, the dancing buzzing bumping bumble bees. Bumble bees are beautiful and resourceful, they are bright yellow, also my favorite color. Fun Fact: did you know that bees dance to each other to communicate?
Bears are my number two. These fuzzy, frightening fellas are very huggable, they come in many colors such as brown, black, and white. Even though bears are huge and dangerous creatures, they are also very kind and greatly care for one another.
One of my all-time favorite animals, which I only discovered my love for recently, are rats. I adopted a pet rat a few months ago, her name is Madonna and she’s become my best friend. Her favorite food is peanuts, and like me, she also loves the color yellow! Rats are very misunderstood creatures and are often seen as pests, but they are just as loveable as any other animal.
Many students at Roosevelt are also animal lovers, Charlie North, known for being an avid animal lover, shares some of his favorite animals.
“My favorite animal is the catfish or carp, corydoras too because they are similar to catfish with little mustaches. Also, crabs and lobsters are awesome, crustaceans are just pretty rad!” North shares.
Lobsters and other sea life are very interesting animals that don’t get enough credit. They are only a fraction of the ocean life we have on Earth, and there are still many more animals to be discovered. There are even blue lobsters, which are incredibly rare to find.
“I have an orange cat and a black and white cat,” North says. “The orange one is Greg and he is awesome, he reminds me of some chill dude. Kayo is the black and white one, she’s pretty cool too.”
North is what some may consider a “cat person,” but there are also many dog owners on campus as well.
Bre Gamboa, a Junior at Roosevelt, shared news of the new puppy she got a few months ago.
“Her name is Cleo and she’s seven months old! She’s a mixed chihuahua I believe. So I have Cleo and five cats at the moment, four are kitties.”
Animals have been our friends and companions longer than we realize sometimes and they’ve changed and evolved in so many different ways and slowly still are. Let’s do our part in appreciating our fuzzy, scaly, feathery, slimy friends.
