Earlier this week, rising singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams announced the release of her second studio album, “The Secret of Us.” This marks the first studio album Abrams has released in a year.
On Sunday, Abrams took to Instagram to announce that her second album will be coming out June 21, with the first single dropping on May 1. Abrams went on to discuss how she crafted this album with some of her favorite people including her close friends, Abby Waisler and Audrey Hobert. According to Abrams’ post, the producer of Abrams’ new album is Aaron Dessner, who has also worked with notable artists like Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and members of his band, ‘The National.’ As seen in her Instagram post, Abrams’ album cover for “The Secret of Us” appears to be a headshot of her looking off into the distance.
As promised, Abrams commemorated the announcement of her upcoming album by releasing the first single of the album, “Risk,” on Wednesday and releasing a music video for the song that same day. In Abrams’ song, “Risk,” she longs for a new relationship to work out while analyzing the risks of pursuing said relationship. Despite those risks, Abrams is willing to give her new relationship a go and becomes “drunk on love” as seen through her abnormal behavior and excessive drinking portrayed in her music video for the single.
Abrams has yet to release the tracklist, however, she did take to Instagram on Thursday to post a story showing that her upcoming album will consist of a total of 13 tracks. The duration of “The Secret of Us” is yet to be announced. Abrams’ debut album, “Good Riddance (Deluxe)” consisted of 16 tracks that accumulated to one hour and eight minutes of listening time whereas her EP, “This Is What It Feels Like,” contained 12 songs that accumulated to 37 minutes of listening time.
Abrams’ album announcement follows her summer spent opening for Swift on ‘The Eras Tour‘ for several dates in the tour’s North American leg, as well as Abrams’ first Grammy nomination for ‘Best New Artist.’ In addition, Abrams’ upcoming album is set to release nearly two years after her gig as an opening act for Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Sour Tour.’
Pre-orders of Abrams’ upcoming album are available on her website which features digital, CD, and vinyl versions of the album. So far, Abrams has released two vinyl variants of the album, one being purple and the other being yellow. Abrams’ website also features signed pieces of vinyl for the same price as regular vinyl.
In an interview with Elle, Abrams revealed that, unlike her last album, her upcoming album has a much more lighthearted, satiric, and dramatic element. In a separate interview, Abrams stated that she truly enjoyed the cultivation of her upcoming album despite the occasional tears that accompanied the writing process of “The Secret of Us.” As for what fans can expect from the album Abrams stated in an interview with Triple J that the album has various emotions it evokes such as wistfulness, bitterness, and happiness. Abrams stated that she hopes fans experience the joy she felt while creating the album while they listen to the album themselves.
Audrina Aguilar wouldn’t call herself a fan of Gracie Abrams but has been seriously contemplating listening to Abrams’ music.
“I first heard of Gracie Abrams while watching an interview with Olivia Rodrigo in 2020 and I never considered listening to her music, but when ‘I Miss You, I’m Sorry‘ became popular on the internet I was genuinely touched by the song,” Aguilar said. “I’ve seen her new album cover which reminds me so much of the early 2000s which leads me to believe that maybe that’s the style she’s going for. I would love to hear how that would sound. Truthfully, just knowing that Olivia Rodrigo is a fan makes me seriously consider listening to her new album when it’s released.”
Priscilla Maldonado, a longtime fan of Abrams can’t wait to listen and dance along to Abrams’ album.
“I think it’ll be a more upbeat album compared to her other music. It’ll be fun!” Maldonado said.
