Arizona will soon outlaw abortions with the only exception being when a woman’s life is at risk. Arizona has been following a restrictive abortion law by the state supreme court dating back to the 1860s.
Since December. In 2022, Arizona allowed doctors to provide abortions 15 weeks and under in pregnancy, but due to the recent law Arizona outlawed abortions of all sorts, not discriminating against rape and incest, claiming that if abortion does take place it is punishable from 2 to 5 years in prison.
Justices have provided a grace period before the law goes into effect for 14 days and may even increase, allowing abortions to be provided during that time. President Joe Biden criticizes the ban and states that the ban can be linked back to Donald Trump, who appointed three conservative judges who ultimately played a crucial role in overturning Roe V. Wade. He adds on saying, “Because of Donald Trump, millions of women lost the fundamental freedom to control their own bodies.” The Democratic Nation Committee (DNC) is also running a billboard campaign placing blame on Donald Trump.
Since the Overturn of Roe V. Wade which took place over two years ago which ultimately gave states the decision if abortion should take place, 14 states have banned abortion with very limited exceptions.
Students at Eleanor Roosevelt High School were asked about their opinion on the given subject, Evan Lightner retorted, ” Abortion should be allowed on a national level. It is a very touchy subject, but women should be allowed freedom and control over their own bodies, and shouldn’t be puppeteered by the government.” Another student with the same principles by the name of Matthew McDanold said,” Not allowing abortions in very critical cases such as rape is a crime itself. The state’s decision-makers who allowed this to happen should be locked up themselves.”
