Are you familiar with the new “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie? This movie is set to break all rules and borders of Marvel and superhero movies as a whole. With several companies and universes crossing over with movies and shows intersecting.
Ryan Reynolds has starred as Deadpool in two films now and was a big fan of the character comics from the 90s. This summer Reynolds is set to star in the third Deadpool film, but this time the film takes a twist. Hugh Jackman, who is most famous for his role as Wolverine in the X-Men film series, is also starring in the movie alongside Reynolds.
The movie is also going to feature other well-known actors who are returning to play their respective characters. Patrick Stewart will be playing Professor X, Jennifer Garner will be returning as Elektra, Karan Soni as Dopinder, and Owen Wilson as Mobius. So needless to say calling this movie a “crossover” would be an understatement.
There are multiple reasons that fans are so excited for this movie to premiere. Deadpool and Wolverine are two characters who are beloved by everyone so seeing them together is “mindblowing” for people. They technically were both together on screen in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” but that was before both characters were properly developed and fleshed out, so it wasn’t anything spectacular. But this movie gives the opportunity for a redo, so the expectations and stakes are high.
Jayden Zavala, a student at Roosevelt who is also a huge fan of both characters, expresses his excitement and predictions for what the movie has in store.
“I love Wolverine! I just wanna see If they fight, and I think it’s gonna be an adaptation of ‘Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe.'” Zavala says.
“Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe” is a comic adaptation where well…Deadpool kills everyone in the Marvel Universe (or the MCU.) It’s considered “non-canon” which means it is entirely unrelated to the timeline the movies and comics follow, but it’s a “what if” kind of scenario. Deadpool is known for being more violent and crude than his other hero counterparts, he’s not even a hero, he’s an anti-hero. But this comic run is significantly darker than how Deadpool is normally portrayed.
Another reason fans are excited is that for the 20 years Jackman played Wolverine, he was never given his iconic yellow suit which he wears in the comics. When Jackman was first announced to return as Wolverine, set photos from the movie were posted of him and Reynolds in their respective suits, and this got fans buzzing with excitement.
This film will be both characters’ first introduction to the MCU, as they were previously owned by 20th-Century Fox, but the studio has since been bought by Disney, and Disney owns Marvel. “Deadpool & Wolverine” will be a part of Marvel’s Phase Five which contains movies and television series that will be released between 2023.
Expectations are high for this film’s release, and with the amount of hype that’s being generated some people may argue that fan’s expectations are “too high.” Marvel and Disney are known for getting criticized for their movies, especially in recent years, some people feel that the studios value quantity over quality when it comes to their content. A new company directing a film that was already established with a previous studio comes with its changes. And with Deadpool and Wolverine being so beloved, what does this mean for the future of their films?
Charlie North, a junior at Roosevelt, expresses his opinion on Marvel’s films.
“I don’t like Marvel movies.” He explains, “They are kind of the same formulas, as in they do the same stuff.”
Fans can only hope that the quality of these two characters remains as they’re introduced to a new universe. So far “Deadpool & Wolverine” is set to release in theaters on July 26th of this year. Will the movie live up to the hype? Or will it ruin two beloved characters? You’ll have to see for yourself this July!
