From 1960 to 1970, the English Rock band The Beatles ruled the world. With matching haircuts, crisply pressed suits, and lots of charm; they easily took over the music industry.
The band consisted of four members; John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Star. They are considered one of the most influential bands of all time. Millions of people still listen to and love their music today. The Beatles had a huge effect on worldwide culture. For young people they represented possibility, they showed that you could be capable of anything. Anyone could become anything. They impacted fashion trends, the economy, the music industry, and rock and roll culture.
Just recently Sam Mendes, a British film director, announced that he would make four separate Beatles biopics—one movie for each member of the band. The films are set to release in 2027, and the plan is to tell the band’s story from each of the respective member’s perspectives. The Fab Four are once again back in the spotlight.
This isn’t the first time a film about The Beatles has been made though, there are dozens of films inspired by the band. While they were still active The Beatles starred in musical films like “Help!” and “A Hard Day’s Night.” Both are musical comedy films that feature the members themselves, as well as their music. At the time these films did very well, earning millions of dollars in the box office as well as various awards.
Many artists start to follow trends later in their careers to stay relevant or to keep their audience engaged. The Beatles however were able to manage their originality while still being the hottest band for decades. Fans could see how their music and looks would change over the decades. Starting with their love songs as more of a boy band and then transforming into a psychedelic rock band. And while they were known for experimenting and trying new things, at their core they were still The Beatles. And no other artist has been able to replicate that feel since.
Even those who aren’t huge fans of the band can acknowledge their impact on people, and the quality of their music. Milan Lee, a student at Roosevelt, shared her perspective on why The Beatles have remained popular for so long.
“I think The Beatles have stayed popular because of the nostalgia their music provides,” she explains, “When adults think of The Beatles they probably think back to when they were younger and in their ‘prime.’ Although the reason it’s still popular among the youth is because of its upbeatness and the fact that it’s danceable!” Lee says.
Nostalgia is a huge factor when it comes to sharing media. It plays with your emotions taking you back to when life was more simple and fun. Presenting old memories that replay in your mind with the perfect soundtrack to compose them. This nostalgia is a big reason why The Beatles are so well known, their music has been shared from generation to generation. Sebastian Halzuet, a junior at Roosevelt, shares how he was introduced to The Beatles.
“My dad grew up listening to them so I would always hear them a lot. I think they’re really relevant today because honestly, they just make good music. And if you make good music you’ll be generational.” Halzuet says.
The Beatles broke up in 1970, and as of now only two members are still alive; Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. But the impact they had on the music and the world as a whole will forever remain. They show that anyone can create something special. Fame overtook the band very suddenly, but there was a time when they were just beginners, “nobodies.” Everyone has a talent and passion to offer, and you never know when it’ll turn into something amazing.
