Valentine’s Day is a love or hate-relationship. Some people love the idea of one special day to celebrate love as a whole, not about one’s own relationship status but all love in general. Others view Valentine’s Day as just another holiday to spend money on candy and decorations and don’t care as much as others might.
Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many different outlets such as festivals, songs, gift-giving, and my personal favorite, rom-coms, or romantic comedies
Personally one of my own favorite Valentines Day memories growing up was in the third grade. All of us kids would prepare for Valentines the entire day making sure we got everyone a Valentine’s treat. This tradition started in elementary schools in the United States around the 90’s/2000’s.
Maria de La Luz, a Mother and Grandmother, believes that the holiday is only for money and that “It’s supposed to be every day” to be ” lovey-dovey”. Supporting the commercial statement in addition to bringing up the idea of celebrating love every day as opposed to one special day.
Dalton Fich, a Junior at Rosevelt High, expresses his perspective on whether Valentine’s Day is Materialistic or sentimental stating,
“Companies use the day to try to get as much money out of people.” Fich shows his feelings towards the companies who sell Valentine-themed products like chocolates, flowers, etc.
The Rom-com Movie “Valentine’s Day” which stars a multitude of gifted actors perfectly illustrates the different ways the holiday is for various people. The movie is structured with different people’s experiences with the holiday mixing comedy drama and of course romance. With topics of cheating, lgbtq, friends to lovers, elderly love, young love, and many more.
This movie perfectly illustrates the different experiences one could have on Valentine’s Day.
What do you believe?
Is Valentine’s Day just a commercialized “holiday”, AKA just another way of getting consumers money by exploiting the celebration of love? Or, do you believe that Valentine’s Day, specifically the story of St. Valentine, is an actual reason to come together as people and celebrate love as a holiday?
