From surprise appearances to first-time Grammy winners to album announcements, this year’s Grammys, which aired on CBS, was truly a memorable night! Here’s a recap of some of the most memorable moments from the 2024 Grammys.
The 2024 Grammys was a big night for Miley Cyrus who took home her first and second Grammys. Cyrus won Grammys for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, both for her hit single, “Flowers.” In her speech for winning Record of the Year, Cyrus made it clear that even if one doesn’t win a Grammy, that does not diminish their worth. She also paid thanks to her sister, mom, boyfriend, team, and loved ones in general. Cyrus did not shy away from flaunting her Grammy wins the rest of the night as she altered the lyrics to her song, “Flowers” later in the night to mention her first Grammy win.
Canadian singer, Celine Dion, who is currently battling stiff person syndrome, made a surprise appearance at the 2024 Grammys to announce the winner for Album of the Year. Dion gave the award to none other than pop sensation Taylor Swift for her album “Midnights” making Swift the first person to win Album of the Year four times, surpassing legendary artists like Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra. The internet had a variety of opinions on Swift’s acceptance speech for this award as she failed to hug Dion and “ignored her”. Some are saying that Swift’s actions were extremely distasteful regarding what a big pop sensation Dion is and her recent medical history.
Along with Album of the Year, Swift also won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for her 2022 album “Midnights.” In her acceptance speech, Swift thanked her fans by announcing that she has a new album entitled, “The Tortured Poets Department” which will be released on April 19. Swift was met with an outcry of applause and cheers as she announced the release of her upcoming album.
“River” singer, Joni Mitchell, stunned the crowd as she took the Grammys stage for the first time ever to perform her ballad, “Both Sides, Now” with Brandi Carlile. Several artists like Gracie Abrams, Amanda Sudano, Adrian Quesada, and Justin Tranter expressed their excitement for Joni’s performance on the red carpet before the award show ceremony.
Attention was drawn to hip-hop artist, Killer Mike, also known as Michael Render, after he was arrested for misdemeanor battery following an alleged contention backstage. Mike was arrested by the LAPD after the Grammy Awards, following his wins for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Album, and Best Rap Performance.
Sunday was also an eventful night for Indie rock group, Boygenius, which consists of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus as they took home their first three Grammys during the Grammy’s preshow for Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Alternative Music Album. Member of Boygenius, Phoebe Bridgers, also won her first Grammy as an individual artist for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance which she won with singer SZA for her feature on SZA’s song, “Ghost in the Machine.”
The ‘Barbie’ Soundtrack also won several awards at the 2024 Grammys with Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell winning Song of the Year for “What Was I Made For?” and also receiving the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media for that same song. In addition, Barbie the Album received a Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.
The Grammy for Best New Artist went to singer-songwriter Victoria Monet who currently has six EPs, 15 singles, and one studio album. Victoria Monet is most notably known for collaborating with artists such as Chris Brown, Ariana Grande, Fifth Harmony, BLACKPINK, and Chloe x Halle. In her acceptance speech, Monet thanked the Recording Academy voting members, her mom, her team, and fellow nominees, and humorously thanked the Champagne servers present at the Grammys.
ERHS sophomore, Nichol Thomas, was ecstatic to see SZA bring home Grammy wins.
“SZA winning a Grammy for ‘Snooze’ was very well deserved and ‘ICU’ by Coco Jones was a great performance,” Thomas said.
ERHS junior, Veronica Cobian, a Swiftie, was very pleased with Swift’s announcement that another album is on the way.
“I was so excited to hear Taylor Swift announce her new album. I can’t wait!” Cobian said.
