Kansans City chefs beat the Miami Dolphins 26-7 where the temperature was negative four degrees with chill winds of negative 27. If you happen to be watching the game or saw clips of it on social media then you could see the conditions that fans had to endure to watch at the stadium. According to the Kansas City Fire Department, they said they had 69 “patient contacts” at Arrowhead on Saturday, with 15 people transported to local hospitals for evaluations due to the extreme cold. Of the 15 people who went to the hospital, seven patients went for hypothermia, three for frostbite, and five for non-weather issues.
While some fans were trying to stay warm up with their blankets and layers upon layers of clothing, others weren’t fazed in the slightest, with some fans going shirtless in insane temperatures. Along with exploding beers due to the cold, Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s mustache was frozen. Although it was cold this didn’t deter the players from keeping the show running, Especially Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. According to USA Today Mahomes was “excited” for the game in subzero temperatures.
“What can be better? Playing foot football in January in Arrowhead Stadium is going to be cold” Mahomes said. “The adrenaline rush gives you that warmness that you’re seeking and you have heaters on the sideline. People make it a big deal, but at the end of the day, you just go out there and play football.
If this game was only the 4th coldest game in NFL history, what was the first? The answer, is Green Bay Packers vs. Dallas Cowboys, Lambeau Field, December 31, 1967. Named the Ice Bowl, with a negative 13-degree temperature and negative 48 degrees of wind chill this game was the coldest NFL game ever recorded. Lambeau’s Field’s turf-heating system malfunctioned, and the field began to freeze gradually in the extreme cold. This left an icy surface that became worse throughout the game.
Chiefs fan Claudia Hernandez had some thoughts on the game when watching it live. I asked her about the extremely cold conditions and her opinion.
“Well, I’m glad I’m not at that game because I would have been frozen. I wonder how the players are even playing, It’s so cold there’s ice in the coach’s mustache, that’s insane.”
