As each year passes by, it seems like there are more trends to be updated. To slang, music, and fashion, the social climate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School seems to be an ongoing cycle of change. With all the trends coming in, which trends have impacted school? To add onto that which trends are worth participating in the long run? Let’s dive into current trends that have influenced the students on campus.
- Sonny Angels
Sonny Angels are mini collectible dolls created by Toru Soeya. They have made a huge rise to fame in the United States, with the largest consumers being teenage girls and young women in their twenties. The cute angel-like collectibles can be either put on a phone case, used as decor for bookshelves, or just placed carefully into your hands as you brag and squeal to your friends about which one you pulled from the blind box. As much as the cuties are fun to collect and buy, there are certain cons about the dolls that can hold an individual back. Unlike Barbies and Legos, Sonny Angels cannot be found in your local Target, only certain sellers carry the item. To add onto that, due to how only a handful of stores can sell the doll, resellers on online websites charge through the roof for them, (for reference an average Sonny Angel is about ten dollars and some resellers can sell them up to over twenty-five dollars.)
2. Stanley’s Cups
Now normally I would be joyous to see an influx of young people taking care of themselves by drinking water, but in this case, that’s not the reason for the sky-rocketing purchase of Stanley Cups. Before 2023, Stanley Cups were reserved for hockey players and your uncle John who packs his can filled with hot coffee for his fishing trips. Nowadays all you can see is ERHS students juggling their 12.3 in. cup across campus. While they do fit into the aesthetics of the 2020s, the cup has many downsides. The cup can’t fit into cup holders of cars, making it a hassle for long road trips. The cup can’t fit into backpacks or spills with a light push, so not the most efficient for high school students. The average cost of one cup is about thirty-five dollars, which is very over-priced for a reusable cup.
3. Uggs
This fashion staple is a nice touch to a winter coat, black flared legging, or a white knitted sweater. Once the weather goes down to sixty degrees, (freezing in southern California), all of the Uggs appear and light stomping is heard from the stairs and down the long hallways. The shoes look good, however, the price range (from seventy to one hundred and twenty dollars) is a bit high, which might be a little too costly for the majority of students. Even though not everyone can afford the iconic boots, there are lovely alternatives that are cozy yet cheap (I should know, I have some knock-offs)
4. Wireless headphones
Wireless headphones are just like plastic water bottles that are always being recycled. In the early 2010s, headphones with tangling wires, and in the late 2010s and early 2020s, Airpods and other wireless earbuds became popular. Now, wireless headphones such as Sony, Apple, Beats, and more are becoming popular on campus. Even though they are extremely expensive, they are a good purchase since it lasts for a lifetime. They are very convenient for study days at the local coffee shop, doing morning pilates, and listening to some ambient music while reading a book. I got a pair of Sony headphones and I have been listening to quality sound ever since.
To conclude, while trends might be fascinating, it is important to not feel overwhelmed by trends. Aesthetics and trends end as fast as they came, so it is important to find things that interest you rather than following what the majority is doing. Individuality is a dying breed, so let’s make that a good trend to follow for 2024 and the years after that.
