Last week ERHS Theater presented their first show of the season, Mamma Mia, and it was a huge success! Theater has always been a huge part of high school culture, and the same goes for Roosevelt. But what makes theater so special? Why do so many people feel that longing and calling to the stage?
David Ireland, Roosevet’s theater director, has been involved in theater since high school, and he shares his experience with directing so far.
“So far being at Roosevelt’s been a dream, It’s been so fun. Honestly, I feel so lucky to be here, I have an incredibly talented group of kids and so I honestly feel lucky to be able to work with them. When you have a really talented, enthusiastic, and dedicated group, it makes directing so much more fun.”
What makes theater so special is how personally involved you can get. As a student, teacher, parent, and even audience member, there’s so much to discover and learn about yourself through theater.
Angelina Castro, a junior, who has been doing theater since she was 10, shares what she loves about theater.
“My favorite part about theater in general is performing and working together with a bunch of people to make an amazing show. And here at this theater, I love performing with friends, performing is my favorite thing but then when you’re doing it with friends it’s even better.”
There’s a place for everyone to perform, but what holds most people back is fear or “stage fright.” Theater involves putting yourself out there, not just in front of an audience but in front of your classmates, friends, family, and even yourself. This vulnerability isn’t something everyone can handle, but it’s worth it if you try it. For many people, theater is their “home away from home.” And the same might be true for you!
