President’s Day
February 16, 2017
Monday February 20th is President’s Day, which means we get another day off! But before you go off to spend your Monday catching up on sleep or hanging out with friends, here is why we have a President’s Day. The American holiday first became official in 1885; it is traditionally celebrated on February 22nd as a recognition to George Washington’s birthday. The holiday date was moved due to 1971’s Monday Holiday Act. The government did this with intentions to create more 3-day weekends for the nation’s workers. On this holiday people show their patriotic side and celebrate the past and present Presidents. President’s Day was held very importantly during the time of the Great Depression; there would be portraits of George Washington on many newspapers and magazines. Today people set up celebrations or reenactments to celebrate President’s Day. However you choose to spend this Monday may you have a safe and fun three day weekend!
