Poetry: As the Fall Starts

This week, I was sitting in my language arts class when the beginnings of a poem made its way into my head. In fact, that’s how many of my poems start, without reason but filled with the inspiration that struck.

It didn’t take me long to write, but I felt it was fitting for this week’s story. As summer comes to an end, the weather, among other things shift.

From Halloween decorations on the street to every special added to a menu, I hope this poem captures the essence of fall, and at the very least an interpretation of it you can agree with too.

it is the beginning of fall and the weather is still scorching
i think of my favorite restaurant
they have long closed their doors
i let the feeling of yearning fall over me

it twists and turns
unsure of what to do with itself
unknowing
if it even exists at all

waiting for the weather to match how i feel
is only waiting for what i’ve always known
thriving in the cold doesn’t always mean you’re
thriving
sometimes it means being the best of the worst which breaks my heart a little anyways

autumn is a blessing boiled with a curse
i let the leaves fall on my face
and a scarf drape itself around my neck

the time to live is here now
it’s what i’ve been waiting for
