The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Episode 2 Breakdown

Cayden Fisher

Long live Captain America.

In episode two the audience learns about the new captain America, John Walker, who is a U.S Agent from the comic books. He goes back to his hometown to reveal himself to the public eye and we also meet his friend Lemar Hoskins who is based off a comic book character, Battlestar, his name is said later. While he’s being interviewed about being the new Cap, the press talk about all he’s done for his country and how on paper he’s supposed to look really good.

We cut to Bucky sitting on the floor, and his facial expressions explains it all to the new Capital America. We then get Sam’s reaction looking at the new Cap poster at the air force base. The next scene is the first scene of Bucky and Sam together since the series started and much to do with their relationship with one another. It started out with Bucky mad at Sam for giving up the shield Steve had personally given him. Bucky and Sam go on a mission to Germany looking for the Flag Smashers, but with little information on who they are. They have their famous “stare-off” which they will once again have later in the episode.

Bucky gets upset at Sam saying he doesn’t have a plan, this is a nice call back to the first Avengers movie when Cap asked Iron Man what his plan was when Thor took Loki out of the quinjet. Bucky then tries to copy what Steve did in “Captain America: Winter Soldier” by jumping out of the plane with no parachute but failing miserably, adding a comic buffer to the serious scenes.

Kyle, a fan of the MCU stated, “I enjoy the little callbacks they do to the old movies.”

They investigate the Flag Smashers who were moving the vaccine around. Bucky and Sam then chase down the trucks that the Flag Smashers are moving the equipment in and Bucky runs into Karli Morgenthau, who he thinks they kidnapped. Soon, however, he realizes she’s a super soldier too, once she kicks him out of the truck. They have an amazing fight scene with eight super soldiers fighting Sam and Bucky.

US Agent

John Walker and Lemar Hoskins show up and make it seem as if they are trying to be better than Sam and Bucky, but also get their butts handed to them. Once they get beat, John and Lemar roll up trying to get them into a car, trying to be a nice guy. He reveals that the government has been spying on Sam and every one of his missions. Bucky clearly does not seem happy with John and stares him down the whole car ride.

Back on the plane Bucky tells Sam that they should just steal the plane, but Sam reminds him last time they did that, referencing Civil War. Bucky and Sam end up going to Baltimore to see the first African American Captain America, Isaiah Bradley who took over for Cap when he went into the ice. The reason Bucky knows who Isaiah Bradely was, is because during the 50s when Bucky was working for Hydra as their personal assassin, they sent Isaiah in to stop him.

Kyle added, “it’s crazy to see that he is still super strong, but now just aged.”

Isaiah’s grandson who is taking care of him, Elijah Bradley, is Patriot from the comics who was in the Young Avengers, so we might see him pop back up in the future. Sam almost gets arrested by cops that show up during a heated argument between Bucky and Sam, but then they realize that he’s an Avenger, diving into the injustice that POC experience with the American police system. Bucky does get arrested because he missed his therapy so he’s taken in to complete his session. The therapist brings Sam into the session between her and Bucky.

Isaiah Bradley

With the next scene the therapist makes Sam and Bucky stare into each other’s eyes, with reluctance the two heroes do. Bucky then confesses to Sam that he’s really upset that he gave the shield away and how the shield is everything he stood for.

A fan of the show, Chelle, commented “when he mentioned that if Steve was wrong about Sam then he was wrong about Bucky, it broke my heart.”

Cutting to the next scene outside of the police station they have a standoff with John and Lemar telling Sam and Bucky to stay out of their way. They follow up with a Zemo lead, because he might have leads since he knows all of Hydra secrets. We end the episode with a clip of Zemo in his cell who we will see more of next episode.
