The Future of Call of Duty

Call of Duty is making major changes. Just this week American video game publisher, Activision, has finally announced some changes coming to Call of Duty: Warzone and the future of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

In my last Call of Duty article, I discussed my thoughts on how the beta looked and played as well as my concerns for the future of Call of Duty. Since then I had the opportunity to play the beta and get a decent feel for the game. In my opinion, the game didn’t live up to my expectations, definitely like the last Black Ops title, yet maybe a little smoother.

I am more skeptical about Black Ops Cold War, which is actually set to release next Friday, but I will keep an open mind about it. Other than that, Activision released their first road map for what is to come for Black Ops Cold War and Warzone.

Starting on November 24, 2020, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will begin the year by releasing their infamous Nuketown map.

From there, on December 10, 2020, Black Ops Cold War’s first season will start off with new game modes, weapons, zombies and Warzone.

Luke, a student at ERHS gave his thoughts on Black Ops Cold War multiplayer saying, “the game has potential to be good” and “I’m glad they’re bringing back gun fight as a gamemode.”

A new problem I had come across was whether or not Warzone’s gameplay was to be changed to match Black Ops Cold War. Activision has now come out stating, Warzone will continue to run the same engine and Black Ops Cold War will run their engine. Which means the way Warzone feels, from the movement style to the weapons will continue being the same while Black Ops Cold War has their own style.

An anonymous gamer exclaimed their excitement stating, “I’m glad they won’t be ruining warzone at the moment.”

Since Black Ops Cold War and Warzone are being mixed, every current weapon within Warzone will still be usable but now Black Ops Cold War weapons will be in the mix too. The weapons from Black Ops Cold War will have crossed progression, being able to level up them in either Warzone, or Black Ops Cold War multiplayer. The weapons from Black Ops Cold War won’t be usable in 2019’s Modern Warfare multiplayer and vice versa.

Activision also released news about Call of Duty’s long running prestige system which was removed in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but is now going to be in Cold War, Warzone and Modern Warfare, having a universal prestige level between the games.

Anonymous stated, “I’m glad I will have more to do this year than in Modern Warfare, finally having prestige back.”

When released, every player will be set back to level 1, while keeping every unlock in Modern Warfare/Warzone. Treyarch will have more to tell on November 6 about the new prestige system. Moving on to operators, at launch, you can take any operator you’ve unlocked from Modern Warfare or Black Ops Cold War into Warzone, including any skins you currently have.

I hope Activision continues in the direction they are going in with the future of Call of Duty and if you purchased the game on Xbox or PlayStation you can now download the game early to be ready for next Friday.
