A program is being launched for the position of the official Poet Laureate of ERHS. A Poet Laureate, according to our student librarian, Nadine Loza, “actually means honored poet [who]… would serve as the official poet of Roosevelt High school for next year.”

The role comes with many responsibilities, as they are tasked with representing the school and community with poetry that reflects it and its culture. Loza explained that the role consists of writing at least three to five poems throughout the school year that would be recited to commemorate some campus events. She also stated that they would “also just help us to promote poetry, help us to get started with.. a student poetry anthology, and serve as the promoter for poetry and really the written word throughout Roosevelt High.”

Tracy K. Smith, pictured above, is currently the official Poet Laureate of the United States of America.

There are some requirements to fulfill for this role. One is that applicants must be incoming seniors so that they will have had experience at our school and better represent our beliefs. Other than that, Loza says that “you just have to be enthusiastic and be willing to have this role next year.”

This program is being launched to hopefully bring about a greater appreciation for poetry and spoken and written word throughout ERHS. There is an official Poet Laureate of the United States, and Loza feels that “to have that official role at Roosevelt high, I think, is pretty exciting.”

If you are interested in becoming the ERHS Poet Laureate, you will need to compose an original poem and submit it to our student librarian by this Monday, May 6. More information can be found on the flyer in this article.
