Sam Smith Comes Out as Gender Nonbinary
March 22, 2019
On actor Jameela Jamil’s new Instagram show, “I Weigh Interviews”, Singer Sam Smith discussed how he views gender and where he falls on the wide spectrum. Smith said that he always heard the terms “nonbinary” and “genderqueer” never fully knowing what they meant. He then found out the definition being those who identify as neither exclusively male nor female, which he really felt related to himself.
Smith then states, “I am not male or female, I think I float somewhere in between.” Many nonbinary and genderqueer people do prefer to be identified as “they” or “them” but as for Smith, he still prefers to be identified with male pronouns like “he” or “him.”
In Smith’s interview with Jamil, this is the first time he explicitly stated what gender he identified as. He has previously talked about his gender “lacking a label” in an interview with the Sunday Times in 2017. Smith said, “I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man” (2017). As seen in this interview, he didn’t state exactly how he identified, he just had a feeling, until now, he is more educated and able to identify with a specific gender.
According to NBC News, Smith came out as gay when he was 10 years old and stopped wearing “boys” clothes when he was 16, also stating he would wear fur and makeup to his school on a regular basis.
“I’ve always been very free in terms of thinking about my sexuality, so I’ve just tried to change that into my thoughts on gender as well…” (Interview with Jamil 2019).
