Government Shut Down Update
January 24, 2019
The Government has been shut down for 35 days starting December 1, 2018, still going on as of January 25, 2019. As of a couple days ago, DACA (Deferred Actions of Childhood Arrivals) gave President Trump an offer so that the government is no longer in shut down. For those who don’t know what the DACA program is, it’s a program that is dedicated to protecting nearly 70,000 immigrants that have stayed in the United States.
“DACA has emerged as an issue in the negotiations over ending the partial government shutdown, with President Trump offering extended but still temporary protection for those in the program in exchange for billions of dollars to build a border wall. Democrats have rejected the offer as “hostage-taking”,” says the Washington Post. With this negotiation, President Trump still wants to put a wall between the United States and Mexico and still give some support toward those who are under the DACA program.
So what will President Trump’s next step be towards ending the shutdown? President Trump stands his ground by saying that he needs funding for the wall between the United States and Mexico. Politico says that “Democrats continued to reject some of the deal’s key provisions, making it unclear what the next step will be.” On Tuesday the justices took no action in reviewing the DACA program.
