Deadly Class: Episode 1 Review
January 25, 2019
If you like deadly teens who can wield swords like professionals, dress in preppy “school girl” outfits, but have killer instincts with abilities to cut your arm off, then you’ll love Deadly Class, a show about King’s Dominion, a high school for assassins who master the art of killing.
Lana Candor’s newly awaited show has been highly anticipated since her outbreak role in the Netflix rom-com, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Her co-stars, Benjamin Wadsworth, María Gabriela de Faría, Michel Duval, and Benedict Wong, make up the exotic and rugged cast.
Deadly class is based off of a graphic novel, which contains eight volumes in total; the eighth said to be coming out in April of this year. The comic book series follows the individual lives of the students that attend King’s Dominion and how they are all training to become the most lethal assassins in San Francisco.
In the television adoption, main character, Marcus, finds himself homeless and on the streets when the boy’s home he was living in after the death of both of his parents, caught fire and burned down. He is accused of ruthlessly killing other residents in the home in order to escape the fire.
Running from the cops and trying to find a place to belong, Marcus runs into attendees of the school where he is given a choice, continue to live on streets without a real home or family, or, join the students at King’s Dominion and make a home for himself, a place where he can finally belong. Hence, Marcus becomes a student at King’s Dominion where he learns that “the dagger in your back is real,” for all the students he encounters never do anything out of the goodness of their hearts. They are deceptive, with negative underlying intentions connected to every choice they make.
Within the first five minutes of attending his new school, Marcus finds himself in rough waters with the Mexican cartel, the gang known as the Soto Vatos. The main leader, Chico, has a death wish for Marcus after he defended Chico’s spicy girlfriend, Maria.
The episode finishes with a brutal battle between Marcus and Chico that ends before either one of them dies. After, Marcus joins the rest of the rebels on the roof where Chico “side eyes” him the whole time. It is safe to say that as the series progresses, Chico and Marcus will have more conflict and physical altercations.
As a whole, I think that the first episode was a great preview as to what the series will be like. It was action packed and filled with violence and even a little love story in between. I was at the edge of my seat the whole time, holding my breath, wondering what danger awaited Marcus as he tried to survive. I love the characters’ personalities and how the director wove their stories together effortlessly.
Eden Fike, ERHS student, watched the Pilot episode and gave her feedback, saying, “The show was interesting… I was intrigued by the main character’s backstory [and] his past made the story line intense.” When asked if she would continue watching the rest of the series, she responded with an enthusiastic, “Yes I will!”
So in conclusion, check out Deadly Class, Mustangs, because it really is an action packed, addicting show!
