The Gender Gap In Sports

Misogyny: The dislike or contempt of  prejudice towards women. The professional sports world has been the subject of several allegations of being misogynistic towards women. The largest and most notable difference between the male and female sports is the gap in payment.

On average, a male soccer player for the United States National Team makes a minimum of fifty thousand dollars;  while their female counterparts at the highest level, can make between six thousand and thirty thousand.

Meaning the lowest paid male player is still compensated with an extra twenty thousand dollars. Female soccer players are expected to make up for the pay gap with personal endorsements and prize purses; which are often more generous toward male athletes.

The trend of male athletes being paid higher than females is not only contained with in soccer; but in all sports as well.

The Forbes 2018 list of the highest paid athletes list that has a combined total of 3.8 billion dollars does not include a female athlete. The hundredth spot occupied by Basketball player Nicolas Batum made a total of 22.9 million dollars total from salary and endorsements is 4,800,000 dollars difference to the highest paid female athlete, Serena Williams with 18.1 million dollars.

“Last year, tennis star Serena Williams was the only women to make a ranking, but the athlete has taken time out from the sport.” Girls Varsity Water Polo player, Samantha Murphy states. “I also feel like the boys water polo team has a larger turn out than girls team, I also think that they get more work. Almost like they don’t think we could handle it.”
