Offensive Fat-Shaming Sweatshirt Outrage

Recently, there has been a huge riot about an offensive sweatshirt that was being sold on Revolve’s website, that made customers extremely unhappy. The sweatshirt that had printed “Being fat is not beautiful, it’s an excuse” was apparently supposed to give out an empowering message and support body diversity. The community unfortunately did not take it the way it was meant, and interpreted the message as a form of fat-shaming, when shown modeled by an obviously thin female.

When the outrage became clear to Revolon, they took this controversial sweatshirt down from their website, and took their apology to Instagram. “”We messed up big. We are SO SORRY for hurting and offending you,” they began to write to upset customers. “We meant to shine a light on the darkness of the internet by printing real-life, damaging comments that could have been left on the social media feeds of women everywhere.” Although this popular website was fairly bruised, their intentions were good, just interpreted wrong.

With social media being the biggest platform around, this incident had been known by individuals who are not everyday Revolon costumers. “ I think the sweatshirt was made by someone who is also a victim of these comments and wanted to make fun of it herself,” Esperanza Valadez, a former Revolon Customer begins to explain. “I do think they could have put it differently and gained more positive attention.”Revolon, ultimately donated $20,000 to the nonprofit organization, Girls Write Now as a further apology for the harm they may have caused throughout the community.
