The ERHS library is hosting an open-mic day mini-event that will occur this Friday, April 27, during both lunches in which students can stop by share a poem – original or someone else’s – or sing a karaoke song or even play the ukulele.

Mrs. Loza, the school librarian, along with Karaoke Club will be running the small event to celebrate both poetry and lyrical song in honor of April as National Poetry Month.

“It’s just an open space here in the library for people to share poetry, and students are invited into this kind of nice performance space that is the library,” Mrs. Loza said in an interview.

“The event is to celebrate poetry, all forms of poetry, spoken poetry, sung poetry, spoken-word poetry, to just celebrate that art form.”

In addition to sharing poetry, students who participate will have their name entered into a drawing where they could win a book among other prizes. Cool fake tattoos will also be given away.

“I think quite a few people in the library will potentially share poetry about themselves that is personal and I hope to see a lot of people participate.”

When asked about the state of poetry in today’s digital world, Loza believes that poetry will be made more accessable due to the advent of the Internet and apps such as Twitter and Instagram.

“Poetry is always going to be produced because we’re the only beings on the planet Earth that are able to produce it. It’s a really cool thing, seeing people embrace poetry thanks to technology, which has made poetry more expressive and personal.”
