In the summer of 1942, a young child was captured by the French police who were rounding up thousands of Jews in the city of Paris and forced in the Vélodrome d’Hiver.  Luckily, this girl, Mireille Knoll, had the ability to escape from being murdered at Auschwitz since she had a Brazilian passport.

Seventy six years later, Ms. Knoll, an 85 year old woman, was murdered right where she had originally been rounded up by anti-Semitists.  Due to the circumstances, authorities are calling her murder a hate crime since she was associated with a particular religion and that was the motive of the murder.

The Interior Minister Gérard Collomb states, “to attack a Jew is to attack France, and the values that are the very basis of the nation.”  France itself is ashamed that anything of this nature would happen in their nation.

Rachel Rojas, a senior at ERHS says”I think the person who committed the crime should be taken into custody and have awful punishments.”

Last year, another elderly Jewish woman was thrown out a window by a man who came from Malian origin.  The investigation took months to solve and France’s Jewish community did not want the same to happen with Ms. Knoll’s murder.

Rachel also states, “Since she has gone through a lot in her life, it’s not fair that she had to suffer through this as well.”

Monday, March 26, two suspects were arrested for the murder of Mireille Knoll.  Both were men in their 20s and one was a neighbor of Ms. Knoll who apparently had a friendly relationship with her.  The main suspect was of North African origin, but the origination of the other suspect is not being released at the time.

One of the murderers claims that they killed Ms. Knoll since “Jews have money” which was found to be the false reason for her death.

The crime is being categorized as anti-Semitism as she had eleven knife wounds and was completely massacred.

Jews are being killed because they are Jews and anti-Semitism will not be accepted, as it extremely serious.
