A Bad Moms Christmas & Thor: Ragnarok to revive the year’s waning box office

November 6, 2017

The beginning of November has two films set to kickstart the fall 2017 box office. Disney/Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, the latest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and STX Entertainment’s “A Bad Moms Christmas” the sequel to the surprisingly successful 2016 “Bad Moms” film are expected to open during the weekend box office of 11/3/17 – 11/5/17.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Thor: Ragnarok” is poised to have an over $100 million dollar weekend, which is higher than 2013’s “Thor: the Dark World,” which made a $85,737,841 opening weekend around the same month. Meanwhile, “A Bad Moms Christmas” is supposedly going to make $22 million – $25 million in the five-day opening it has up all the way to the weekend, as that film already opened yesterday – November 1 – to $2.6 million. This projected total would match the three-day weekend debut of the first film.

The sudden expected surge in the beginning of November’s box office comes after the films released in the October box office.

“Blade Runner 2049,” the long-awaited sequel to the 1982 cult film that stars Ryan Gosling as K and Harrison Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard, had $32,753,122 opening weekend, a far cry from the industry-projected $45-50 million prediction made prior to the film’s release, according to Box Office Mojo.

Other films that were released in October include “The Mountain Between Us” a smaller film starring actors Idris Elba and Kate Winslet that opened at the same time as “Blade Runner 2049,” “My Little Pony: The Movie,” “The Foreigner,” “Geostorm,” “The Snowman,” “Only the Brave,” “Suburbicon,” “Jigsaw,” “Thank You for Your Service,” etc.
